Séminaire DIC-ISC-CRIA du 20 octobre 2022 avec Christian Lebière
Séminaire DIC-ISC-CRIA du 20 octobre 2022
Par Christian Lebière : "Cognitive architectures and their applications"
Résumé :
Cognitive architectures are computational implementations of unified theories of cognition. Being able to represent human cognition in computational form enables a wide range of applications when humans and machines interact. Using cognitive models to represent common ground between deep learners and human users enables adaptive explanations. Cognitive models representing the behavior of cyber attackers can be used to optimize cyber defenses including techniques such as deceptive signaling. Cognitive models of human-automation interaction can improve robustness of human-machine teams by predicting disruptions to measures of trust under various adversarial situations. Finally, the consensus of 50 years of research in cognitive architectures can be captured in the form of a Common Model of Cognition that can provide a guide for neuroscience, artificial intelligence and robotics.
Bio :
Christian Lebière is a Research Faculty member in the Psychology Department at Carnegie Mellon University. His main research interests are cognitive architectures and their applications to psychology, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, decision-making, intelligent agents, network science, cognitive robotics and neuromorphic engineering.

Ever since childhood I've known that humans were bound for extinction. Didn't realize how quickly I would be proven correct. I knew in the 1970s that plastic was going to be problematic along with the destruction of natural spaces in order to accommodate more single-family housing. In college I was told that my calls for population control were racist and hysterical. Now, I am horrified on a daily basis to read that I was correct. How can anyone who understands these scientific truths feel good about having children?

Earth is suicidal because of us. If there is a hell in earth's perfect memory of our misdeeds, we're in big trouble, earth knows. The people who know need a religion, so they can be excluded for the right reasons.

Earth's response will be bring humans back to a manageable level with extinction of most of us. Because empire is split multiple times and there are those willing take up the space left by any dropping out of the "race," it is likely the concepts of empire will survive the extinction. That's very sad. The darkest of futures are what earth is now, an AI weapons platform.

I am convinced that acedemics choose to ignore the development of Permaculture (literature and application internationally for 50+ years) and talk all around it. Is it possible someone like this has researched this much and not come across a systems theory and ethics based aproach to human design (permaculture as layed out by Bill Mollison and those that have followed) Please research and apply permaculture!

Doubt is woven into science as part of the scientific method. Without it science becomes religion and if you doubt something the next step is denial. There is another characterization of that process, an indelicate word, bullshit. Being taken to task for denial there are many who actively oppose it, just not enough to suit me.

Humans did live within the limits of Earth's carrying capacity up until 230 years ago. They did it without written texts, electricity, and no large-scale farming. They were extremely successful for at least 45,000 years and possibly as long as 75,000 years. We have to look to pre-industrial indigenous societies as our guides to transitioning to new lifestyles. Or we can just continue as usual, believe the lies we're fed (read The Powell Memo), and let our species go off the cliff. (The trip to the cliff edge will not be fun either.)

While our scientific institutions have correctly identified the risks of climate change, those holding the purse strings have decided to ignore the vast majority of the evidence, to carry on 'business as usual'. Profits now being the main reason. Sadly for them they have not understood that the very fabric of what they hold most precious, their wealth, is going to be one of the first major victims of climate change; our global economy will not survive what is coming over the coming decades.

I cannot add further to your fine interviews, Bill Rees. We Canadians have already almost destroyed our major fishing industries, chopped down too many forests, polluted too many rivers & lakes, and maybe worst of all we ignored our First Nations' advice - and forced them off their land onto tiny poverty- stricken reserves, And attempted genocide against them with evil residential 'schools'. The Arctic Ocean is losing its protective ice cover, so guess what they'll try then? In with more oil rigs! ** And global warming is burning up our vast forests. Decades ago a host of the fine program 'the Nature of Things', John Livingston, called humans a rogue species. Canada, the world's second biggest country, with huge resources and small population, must be a laughing stock by selling out to capitalist foreigners. Need I say more?🇨🇦

This thinking is overdue. It has always been odd to me, that scientists don't tend to be activists. If not scientists then who? The fear of the public space of politics, social backlash for being impartial seems to have created a caution, that plays into the hands of the uninformed. I have to say even the courts are not impartial, so why don't scientists run for office or step forward in other useful ways? Who else has received funding to do the background research? Like I said, I have always found the timidness of scientists to be activists odd. Who else if not you?

The wonderful thing about Bill's work is how very right he is about how our lives are out of control. Being right is only 5% of decision-making, though. First, you need to survey the context for what's missing, material observations other than being right. Hopefully, early on, you'll notice that the job of economies is to build and maintain lasting physical and societal structures. There are absolute right and wrong ways of building systems, and our whole movement's failure to look at what we're building. The justified emotional and social meanings need to work side by side with the basic requirements for building systems that last, ............LEARNING A BIT ABOUT HOW SYSTEMS NATURALLY BUILD AND SECURE THEMSELVES THEIR FUTURES WOULD HELP.

It is insane to me that academics simply go along with & assist in developing what is essentially modern mass manipulation techniques like this (well maybe not that insane, that govt intel money is pretty sweet) & view these techniques as an acceptable tool to be used upon the general public including children. The potential for abuse is straight through the roof & the lack of ethics is startling. This is what happens when we willfully place blinders on & ignore potential moral, ethical & abuse issues simply because at that time we had good intentions & the tool we develop was initially intended to be used for a very noble cause.
